The outbreak of the coronavirus means lasting restrictions for academic teaching. To mitigate the adverse effects, Springer Nature is launching a global program to support learning and teaching in higher education institutions around the world. The specific measures provide that teachers and students from academic institutions can access more than 500 important English and German textbooks in the Springer Nature eBook packages free of charge. These books are expected to be available on the SpringerLink platform until at least the end of July.

Springer Nature has already made thousands of research articles, books and book chapters on the subject of coronavirus freely available in order to facilitate access to important research results. Librarians are also supported if they want their staff and students to have online access from home. This new textbook initiative goes one step further and aims to support learning and teaching efficiently. Students, academics and university staff now have free access to key Springer Nature textbooks.

Niels Peter Thomas, Managing Director Springer Nature Books, said: “Given the increasing global impact of the Corona crisis, fast remote access to educational resources has become essential. We would like to support lecturers, teachers and students in this challenging time and hope that we will make an important contribution by activating over 500 important textbooks for free. At this point I would like to thank our authors for the great support without whose consent we would not have been able to activate these books so easily. "

A special book package with German-language textbooks and specialist books from the fields of intensive care medicine and pulmonology will also be activated on the SpringerLink platform. The selected titles of the special book package are aimed at nursing and medical professionals. This package is a free offer for clinical facilities in the current medical emergency: The Wissenschaftsverlag would like to help hospitals to train their staff in such a way that they are sufficiently qualified for the coming weeks to competently care for the increasingly expected corona patients with severe disease .

Macmillan International Higher Education (MIHE), the education division of Springer Nature, also supports the international program.
