How much physical activity is too much

Leisure time physical activity

The results below come from the "Austrian Health Survey 2019".

Physical activity is understood to mean "any movement of the body that is accompanied by a contraction of the muscles and increases energy consumption beyond the normal resting energy requirement". Exercise is important for health and quality of life and makes an important contribution to maintaining health and wellbeing. Physical activity includes many sports and leisure activities, but also daily activities such as brisk walking, housework and physically demanding work. In the last decade, a comprehensive concept of "health-enhancing physical activity" (HEPA) has established itself, which, in addition to leisure-related movement activities, includes physical activity in the context of work and housework as well as for the purpose of transportation. Persistent sitting such as office work is a risk factor for the development of noncommunicable diseases. Targeted promotion of physical activity can counteract the development of diseases and complaints at any age.

Sufficient physical activity according to WHO recommendations for the 18 to 64 year old population
