Are laptops allowed in a classroom?

Lower Saxony: Green light for buying teachers' laptops

Status: 19.01.2021 6:11 p.m.

The state of Lower Saxony can purchase mobile devices for teachers for 50 million euros. The cabinet approved the federal-state agreement on loan equipment for teachers on Tuesday.

The agreement is the third expansion of the School Digital Pact. Before that there was already the immediate equipping program for pupils and the support of the school authorities with administrative costs. For Lower Saxony, a total of more than 670 million euros are available for schools from the pact.

Lower Saxony topped up from special funds

The state will receive around 47 million euros through the current agreement and will top it up by 4.7 million euros with an own contribution of ten percent. The own share is provided from the state's Corona special assets. The funds are to be spent in 2021. According to the cabinet, the aim is to enable schools to provide teachers with laptops, notebooks and tablets for teaching. A corresponding funding guideline will be published soon.

Ton: "Digital learning is becoming more important"

The current situation with a high proportion of pure distance teaching shows that the topic must be pursued vigorously, and that will also apply after a possible end to the corona pandemic, said Lower Saxony's Minister of Education, Grant Hendrik Tonne (SPD). Learning with digital media is becoming more and more an integral part of everyday school life, so teachers should also be supported accordingly.
