Sports official Walther Tröger (December 30th)

Walther Tröger

German top sports official Walther Tröger died at the age of 91. Walther Tröger was an influential figure in the world of sports politics for decades. He directed the National Olympic Committee (NOK) as general secretary and president. He was also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for 20 years.

Born in the Bavarian town of Wunsiedel, the lawyer began his career in sports politics at the General German University Association, which he helped to direct as General Secretary from 1953 to 1961. Tröger then moved to the then NOK in the same position until he was promoted to sports director of the IOC (1983 to 1990).

As Mayor of the Olympic Village at the Summer Games in Munich, Tröger faced one of his greatest challenges when, on September 5, 1972, Palestinian terrorists took Israeli athletes, coaches and referees hostage.

Fashion designer Pierre Cardin (December 29)

The French fashion designer Pierre Cardin is dead. As his family announced to the AFP news agency, he died on December 29 at the age of 98 in a hospital in Neuilly, west of Paris. Cardin had already founded his own fashion house in 1950, and in the decades that followed he built up a global corporate empire.
