Pizza giant Papa John's opens its first branch in Germany

Papa John's was founded in 1984, has been active on the world market for over 40 years and now operates over 5,000 branches in around 45 countries. 80 percent of the stores are operated by franchisees. One of the largest franchisees is the Russian company PJ Western, which among other things holds the rights for Russia and Poland, but is also responsible for the expansion into the Federal Republic. There are currently around 200 Papa John's restaurants that are operated by PJ Western.

In the USA, Papa John’s, long-time sponsor of the NFL, is currently in fourth place behind Little Cesar’s and is far behind the market leaders Domino’s and Pizza Hut, which are already well represented in Germany. Domino’s has even risen to become the largest pizza chain in Germany.

In order to gain a foothold in Germany, the pizza chain already took over fourteen branches of the Uno pizza chain in 2019, which has been active in central Germany for over 25 years. As a result, plans were gradually implemented to open “real” Papa John's branches in Germany. These should actually have started operating last year in the spring, but the opening was delayed due to the rampant corona pandemic.

But now that the first three UN pizza locations had been converted, the first Papa John's branch opened in Magdeburg at the end of February 2021. Another 250 Papa John's restaurants are to follow in Germany over the next seven years. Again, these will be managed through PJ Western and not through US headquarters.
