Gebrüder Weiss is now active in 28 countries around the world with around 6,500 employees. Where did your last expansion steps lead you?

With the takeover of a forwarding company in Almaty in 2016 and the establishment of our own locations in Singapore and Russia (Moscow and Naberezhnye Chelny), the existing network was strengthened and the geographical gap between Europe and China closed. From Singapore there are now ideal connections to the surrounding Southeast Asian countries as well as to Australia and New Zealand.

The location of Kazakhstan is also very important in order to be able to offer a high quality of service in the Central Asian region. The six employees at the Kazakh location have many years of experience in national and international project business as well as regional general cargo transport - especially in the automotive sector. In addition to air and sea freight transport, the services include full truck loads (FTL), groupage, rail and heavy transport.

Together with the locations in Dubai and Shanghai, Gebrüder Weiss GmbH now also covers the Southeast Asian region after the Middle East and China. Customers also benefit from the established air and sea freight network and regional know-how that has been built up in these regions over the past decades.

What role does the support from go-international play in entering the market?

The funding facilitates expansion steps, as the first few years of a new entry always represent a very large investment and every euro is helpful here.

In which situations is the cooperation with the foreign trade centers particularly effective?

For each of the three market entries, contact was made in advance with the Foreign Trade Center in order to obtain important basic information and to be able to better assess the opportunities and risks. Tips for any consulting company or local service provider are also very helpful, especially at the beginning. Most of the time, the country organizations are in contact with the Foreign Trade Center and regularly take part in local events. These are always a good opportunity to come into contact with people in decision-making functions.

How is Russia different from other countries in which you already operate?

Russia differs very much in terms of time and complexity in handling a transport. The documentation requirements for customs clearance are probably among the most difficult in the world. This is a great challenge and at the same time an opportunity to convince customers with high service quality. If you can inspire them and gain their trust, that is the basis for long-term partnerships. That is exactly the goal of Gebrüder Weiss GmbH.
