Does beer make you fatter than other alcohol?

In principle, beer does not make you thicker than other alcoholic beverages. It even contains fewer calories than wine or brandy, for example. However, beer is usually drunk in larger quantities than other alcoholic beverages, so this difference is put into perspective again.

One gram of pure alcohol contains around seven kilocalories. For comparison: one gram of sugar contains four kilocalories and one gram of fat contains nine kilocalories. However, the awareness of sugar and fat as high-calorie components of food is very pronounced. Most people also perceive them accordingly through the taste of food. For alcohol, however, this only applies to a limited extent, so that one can easily consume more calories through alcoholic beverages than one is aware of. At the same time, alcohol inhibits fat breakdown in the body, so that calories that have already been consumed cannot be used up so quickly.

Half a liter of beer adds up to 200 to 300 kcal, depending on the type. The same amount of red wine contains 425 kilocalories, more than twice as much energy as beer, but usually not as much wine is drunk. A small wine glass usually holds 100 milliliters of wine, which comes up with 85 kilocalories for red wine and 75 kilocalories for white wine or rosé. In relative terms, spirits have a lot of calories due to their high alcohol content, but a glass usually only contains 20 milliliters. This only contains 45 kilocalories.

Regular, increased consumption of alcohol is not only harmful to health, it also makes you fat, provided you do not use up the calories you have consumed with a corresponding amount of exercise. Beer does not lead to faster and higher weight gain than other alcoholic beverages. However, due to its relatively low alcohol content compared to wine or spirits, beer is more likely to be drunk as a thirst quencher to accompany meals and therefore regularly. These circumstances can actually make you fatter. Nothing speaks against the occasional, moderate consumption of a small glass of beer. However, beer is unsuitable as a thirst quencher and regularly for eating. Better to use water or unsweetened fruit or herbal teas here.
