Too little sleep is not always the reason for tiredness and exhaustion. Often there are also other causes behind it. It is not uncommon for tiredness and exhaustion to indicate that something is missing in the body.

Correctly interpreting symptoms and signals: How much tiredness is normal?

Fatigue is a natural condition. Usually, we feel tired after exerting ourselves physically or mentally. The body can usually recover and recharge its batteries through healthy sleep and sufficient breaks.

However, if tiredness and exhaustion cannot be explained by excessive exertion or lack of sleep, these symptoms can also be a warning signal from the body. Permanent exhaustion or persistent tiredness should definitely be taken seriously. Most of the time, our body wants to give us a sign that something is wrong.

Stress as a cause of fatigue

Stress is a common cause of exhaustion and fatigue. Because stress - especially chronic stress - puts the body on constant alert. But our organism can only maintain this state for a certain period of time. If the resources are exhausted, we fall into a deep energy hole.

To make matters worse, we tend to eat unhealthily when we are stressed. We eat quick snacks, ready meals and fast food in a hurry while standing or on the go. And this despite the fact that stress increases the need for micronutrients - i.e. vitamins, minerals and trace elements - even further. Then the only thing that helps is to refill the stores and work on the causes of the chronic stress.

If you are tired and exhausted, make sure you eat the right diet

A persistent feeling of tiredness and exhaustion could also be a sign that the body is missing important micronutrients. The German Nutrition Society recommends at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day. The latest studies even suggest seven or more servings. But in fact, most people only manage two servings on average.

Make sure you eat a healthy, varied diet rich in vital substances. Specifically, it is the micronutrients folic acid, magnesium, iron, niacin, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 that help reduce tiredness and fatigue.

Fatigue due to lack of nutrients

According to the National Consumption Study II from 2008, the majority of Germans have a folic acid deficit. 79 percent of men and 86 percent of women fall below the recommendations for folic acid intake. Folic acid is an important vitamin - not only for pregnant women - because it helps, among other things, to reduce tiredness and fatigue.

As a central element of the red blood pigment hemoglobin, iron contributes to normal oxygen transport and normal energy metabolism. This is because the trace element binds oxygen molecules that are transported by the red blood cells through the entire body and supply the organism with oxygen right into the cells. Oxygen is needed in the mitochondria of the cells to generate energy, among other things. If the body has too little iron available, only little oxygen can be bound. The result: We feel limp, exhausted, tired and listless.

Pantothenic acid is a vitamin and belongs to the group of B vitamins. As part of coenzyme A, it also plays a role in the cell's energy metabolism. Deficiency symptoms can occur with diets, the elderly, with chronic liver diseases and with high alcohol consumption.

Vitamins, minerals and trace elements rarely work alone, but often need each other in order to be properly metabolized in the organism. For example, vitamin C increases the absorption of iron. Zinc and selenium, together with vitamins B2, vitamin C and vitamin E, protect the cells from oxidative stress. Therefore, the level of vital substances should always be raised as broadly as possible - not least to avoid imbalances.

Preventing exhaustion
