Signal contacts

A contact symbol is displayed for contacts saved in the contact list on your mobile phone displayed by the name in the conversation.

Who is on the contact list?

  1. Other Signal users who are saved in your mobile phone's contact list.
    • When you look at your contact list in Signal, a blue letter indicates that it is a Signal contact.
  2. Other Signal users who are not saved in your mobile phone and with whom you share a group have sent messages beforehand or have given their express consent.
    • Your Signal PIN restores these unsaved Signal users when you reinstall.
  3. If you have set Signal as your default SMS / MMS app, you will also see non-Signal contacts listed.

Edit your contact's name

  1. Save this person in the contact list of your mobile phone to change the appearance of their name.
  2. Open your Android Contacts app and edit the contact entry to change the name.
  3. Save the number in the internal memory of your mobile phone instead of on the SIM card or in the cloud.
  4. The contact icon appears on the name of your contact in the conversation.

Edit your contact's picture

  • Save this person and a picture in the contact list of your mobile phone to see this picture instead of their profile picture.
  • Activate the setting to view saved contact details. Go to Signal Settings > Conversations > activate Use photos from address book (Android) or Use system contact photos (iOS).

Edit your contact's name

  1. Open your Android Contacts app and edit the contact entry.
  2. Add the "+" and the country code to your contact's phone number.
  • Numbers from Brazil should start with +55, followed by the respective city code, e.g. +55 21 (mobile phone number).
  • Numbers from Argentina should start with +549, followed by the respective city code, e.g. +549 11 (mobile phone number).
  • Numbers from Ivory Coast should begin with the area code +225, followed by the respective city code, e.g. +225 07 (8-digit number).
  • Save the phone number in the internal memory of your mobile phone instead of on the SIM card or in the cloud.
  • Then update your contact list.
  • Update your Signal contact list

    1. In Signal, tap Composeto view your Signal contact list.
    2. Go down in the contact list to update it.

    Re-sync contacts

    1. In Android, go to Settings> Accounts> Signal> Menu> Remove Account.The data cleanup warning is incorrect, your messages will not be deleted.
    2. In Signal, tap Composeto view your Signal contact list.
    3. Go down in the contact list to update it.

    Remove someone from your Signal contact list

  • In Signal, tap Compose to view your Signal contact list.
  • Go down in the contact list to update it.
  • All contacts who are Signal users are displayed.
  • If you don't have Signal contacts, you can invite your contacts to use Signal.

    Where are my contacts?

    Only Signal contacts saved in your mobile phone's contacts will be shown in Signal Desktop. If you don't see any other Signal contacts, try updating your contact list.

    Update your Signal contact list

    1. Update your contacts in Signal Android or Signal iOS.
    2. Make sure your mobile phone is connected to the internet.
    3. Go to Signal Settings in Signal Desktop >  Settings ...>Import now.

    Edit your contact's picture or name

    1. Follow the steps above to edit them in Android or iOS.
    2. Go to Signal Settings in Signal Desktop >  Settings ...>Import now.

    Remove a contact from the Signal contact list

    1. Select the contact's name, go to conversation settings and choose Clear. This will remove your contact from the box on the left. You can still receive messages or calls from this contact.
    2. Alternatively, block the contact on your mobile device. You will not receive any messages or calls from this contact.
