iSCSI - Internet SCSI

iSCSI is a protocol to connect data storage devices to Storage Area Networks (SAN) in data centers and to transfer the data over the existing infrastructure of Ethernet and TCP / IP. In iSCSI, the SCSI commands are bundled together with the data in Protocol Data Units (PDUs) and embedded in serial form as iSCSI in TCP / IP and then transmitted via Ethernet. iSCSI is therefore an alternative to Fiber Channel over Ethernet.

iSCSI is a standard of the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA). The SNIA is an association of more than 300 companies active in the storage sector.

The server that offers the network storage is called the target. The computer that integrates the virtual hard disk into the system is called the initiator.
iSCSI only knows point-to-point connections. Mechanisms such as SMB or NAS to enable multiple users to access are not known to iSCSI. iSCSI transfers the data blocks independently of the file system and thus differs from network shares such as SMB. In this way, the overhead remains low. This enables a high data throughput.

How does iSCSI work?

iSCSI is a protocol for connecting PCs with large storage space requirements to network hard drives so that they can be used like local drives. iSCSI practically extends the cable to the hard drive over the local network. A hard drive is integrated directly into the system via iSCSI. It would be conceivable to operate a computer without a built-in hard drive.
If you connect the hard disk via iSCSI, the data carrier appears in the control panel of the PC as an additional drive. At first glance, the drive doesn't seem to be any different from a local drive. It can be partitioned and formatted as usual.

iSCSI has the same function as FCP (Fiber Channel Protocol). ISCSI is about mapping the SCSI protocol on serially operated networks. The data traffic is handled via TCP / IP. The iSCSI protocol stack is then usually a protocol combination of SCSI, PDU, iSCSI, TCP / IP and Ethernet. This has the advantage that the data can be accessed wherever a network connection is available.

Applications

iSCSI is used in data centers as a protocol for linking SANs.
