How can people love God

An encouragement from Joyce Meyer | Reading time: 3 minutes

The most important thing a Christian should worry about is loving his neighbor. But that's often where the problem lies. After we have entrusted our lives to Jesus, we are immediately confronted with the need to love our fellow human beings. But somehow we can't do it. And so we think that something is wrong with us. Basically, however, you have to take certain steps before you can love others.

Learn to live in God's love step by step

First of all, we need a revelation about how much God loves us. It is not enough just to know that God loves us. You have to experience your love yourself and accept it for yourself.

Second, it is important to learn to love yourself. In other words, are you happy with yourself as God made you? Or are you trying to be what you think people around you want to see you?

Third, we should learn how to love God. To love God means one thing above all else: obedience. Jesus said: If you love me, you will keep my commandments (John 14:15). When we have received his love, it is only natural to do what he tells us to do.

Now let's take a closer look at each of the three steps to learn how we can live fully in God's love.

Step 1: Experience the love of God for yourself

Many people sing the song "Jesus certainly loves me because the Bible tells me this" without having the deep inner certainty that God really loves them. If everything is going well in your life, you may believe that God loves you. But when things get tough, they wonder where God is and whether He ever loved them at all.

In our head we may know that God loves us. But it is important that it also slip from the head to the heart. Only there does it become a certainty. Then it doesn't matter what the enemy wants to tell us, what others might say or what our circumstances are - we just know. And we know it so firmly that this certainty can no longer be stolen from us.

How does head knowledge become an inner certainty? I believe we need to take the time to meet God and accept His love.

You probably know how much pigs love to wallow in the mud. They don't care about their appearance. They just wade in and roll over until they are covered in mud over and over. Likewise, we should take the time to wallow in God's love. We should allow ourselves to be soaked in it and soak it up in us.

Many people try to be perfect and want to earn God's love with it. But God is love. He just wants us to be a vessel for his love and receive it as a gift.

Step 2: learn to love yourself

There are people who do a lot for others, but nothing for themselves. That is not right, there is a lack of balance. These people do not treat themselves well and often feel as if they are worthless.

There are many different reasons we can be negative about ourselves. Maybe you grew up in a family where your parents never gave you anything. Or maybe you got insulted by them all the time. It may be that you have been abused and always thought it was your own fault.

God's love is the best medicine for every bleeding heart. If you have been abused or mistreated in your life, I want to tell you, God loves you. You may not understand why these terrible things happened to you. But whoever loves God and has been called by him, all things - including the bad - will serve for the best (see Romans 8:28).

It is very important that you learn to love yourself for who you are. Start pampering yourself, you really deserve it. This is even important for you so that you are healthy and internally balanced. A balanced lifestyle also includes accepting correction from God. In Revelation 3:19 we read:

This is how I do it with everyone I love: I expose what's wrong with them and correct them. So put an end to your indifference and turn back!

The Bible: Revelation 3:19

How often do we distance ourselves from God as soon as He points out inconsistencies instead of running to Him? Somewhere in our head we have the weird notion that God may be angry with us. But when he rebukes us, he is actually showing us that he loves us and will never leave us alone.

It takes some of us a long time to understand. But once we understand it, we also know God's attitude towards us in our hearts. Then we no longer need to be hurt and hit inside, but can thank God for his correction.

Step 3: To love God means to love people

Jesus said something great:

I give you a new commandment: that you love one another. As I have loved you, you too should love one another. From this everyone will know that you are my disciples (...)

The Bible: John 13: 34-35

In 1 Corinthians 13 we read what love really means. Love is patient, kind, humble, not rude, and not easily offended. So when you really love, it's no longer about things like "You hurt my feelings". We shouldn't forget that.

Because how many times have we hurt someone else's feelings? How many times have we been rude because we were in a rush? How many times has God had to forgive us at this point?

The people around us hunger for love. We see people everywhere who don't even know who they are in Christ. As soon as something goes wrong in their life, they believe that something is wrong with them and that God no longer loves them.

We cannot expect people to feel loved if they do not see God's love flowing through us.

In 1 Corinthians 13: 1 it says:

If I speak with the tongues of men and angels, but have no love, then I am a noisy ore, a noisy cymbal.

The Bible: 1 Corinthians 13: 1

In the Bible we are encouraged to communicate with others Agape love to love: that is the unconditional love of God, that motivates us to devote ourselves to others. The same love makes us happy and contented as well. But until we have taken these steps, we cannot love others as God loves us. We can only pass on what we have ourselves.

I want to encourage you to take these three steps on the path of love. Because if you know how to put God's love into practice, how it flows into our families and to our neighbors and work colleagues, then we will win people over to God.
