What is UWC looking for in applicants

FAQs

Who can apply?
All pupils living in Switzerland who are at least 16 and not yet 18 years old on June 30 of the respective year of entry and who are familiar with the Swiss way of life can apply for UWC. Deviations from this regulation are only possible in cases of hardship that are specifically justified.

What are the requirements?
The Swiss Association for the UWC is looking for talented personalities who are worthy of support. It is important to have a well-balanced, good grades, as the demands on the students at the colleges increase slightly compared to their previous school. This is due, on the one hand, to the fact that the language of instruction is English and, on the other hand, to the familiarization with a new school and learning system. In addition, the pupils should be able to take part in the various college activities without being restricted by the stress of learning. Just as important as good grades are the applicant's personality, sense of responsibility, commitment and interest. The parents' financial background does not matter. Only personal suitability and talent are decisive.

Is there a registration deadline?
The registration deadline is November 30th. Applications received later can only be considered in cases of hardship.

Can you apply if you live abroad?

A verifiable personal connection to Switzerland and the Swiss way of life is decisive for admission to the Swiss Committee. As a rule, this presupposes that the majority of compulsory schooling is completed at a Swiss school or familiarity has been gained through living in Switzerland for many years and as a member of extracurricular activities in associations or similar. Young people with a Swiss background who have spent a large part of their life abroad apply through the national committee of the country in which they are domiciled or through the UWC Global Selection Program.

Can you apply for just one year?
School attendance at a UWC is always for two years. Unfortunately, we cannot consider applications for a one-year college visit.

From which grade level can you be admitted to a UWC?
In general, pupils who are 15 or 16 years old and are attending high school apply to UWC.

How much are the school fees?
The school fees for a UWC vary from school to school and averaged CHF 50,000-70,000 for both school years. The costs include class tuition, accommodation in a standard room, all meals, educational care and support, sports and other leisure and weekend activities. This does not include travel expenses and pocket money.

How do you get a scholarship?
The selection depends solely on personal suitability. Only after the selection is the financial situation checked or whether the family financial situation only requires partial support.

The funds for scholarships are mainly raised through private donations, so that the award of scholarships is decided according to need. As a rule, these are partial scholarships for the cost of attending school.

Is the selection process very difficult and how can you prepare for it?

In the written and oral part of the selection day, personal motivation and suitability are checked. The essay on a general topic helps us to see how you develop your thoughts on a topic and thus perhaps also form an opinion. No school-based knowledge in the traditional sense is asked for, so we look at the certificates. The best prerequisite for doing well in the selection process is an interest in public and international events and an open-minded, open manner when you come to us.
